HIGHLIGHTS

Namibia:

On 17 May 2013 the President on Namibia declared a national drought emergency and called for assistance from the international community. An estimated 330,925 people have now been classified as food insecure (14 % of Namibia’s total population of 2.324 million).

Madagascar:

International pressure is mounting on Andry Rajoelina, Lalao Ravalomanana and Didier Ratsiraka to withdraw from the presidential elections scheduled for 24 July 2013. Widespread locust outbreaks continue to threaten food security.

Angola: Plans are being developed to address food insecurity conditions in southern Angola, following a prolonged dry spell.

South Africa:

Up to 19 foreign-owned shops were looted in Diepsloot Township in Johannesburg.
